CDL Exclusive: Interview With Scottish Singer-Songwriter Sandi Thom

Scottish beauty Sandi Thom is best known for her No.1 platinum album Smile… It Confuses People, in which she released back in 2006 – however now the multi-talented (and let’s not forget stunning) lass is gearing up for the release of her fourth studio album, Flesh and Blood. 
 
While fans will have to wait for the August 14th release date, I had the privilege to sample some of her music – including the fantastic cover of Trent Reznor’s ‘Hurt’.  If you can recall, Johnny Cash also covered the song, making it critically known among all his fans, and when I asked Sandi if she was a fan of both artists’ renditions, she had this to say: 
 
“In all honesty I was only ever really aware of the song after Johnny Cash covered it, Some songs when you hear them just it you hard in the heart, this song sung by Johnny Cash moved me to tears, so I knew I could sing it with great emotion”. 
 
Flesh and Blood was produced by the Black Crowes’ Rich Robinson, and of working with him Sandi said: 
 
“It was amazing, he became like a brother to me. When you spend 3 weeks intensely in a studio together writing and recording songs that come from your heart and soul you cut out the small talk, we got to know each other well and very quickly. I hope to continue to make records together well into the future with Rich”. 
 
Sounds like a very creative and inspiring process to me.  I was curious as to how each album differentiates from the last and Sandi told me that for her, Flesh and Blood was an entirely different experience in that everyone was new to her, and that it was refreshing and exciting for her to work with new people and such talented ones at that. 
 
One song on her album, The Sun Comes Crashing Down has a country feel to it. I asked Sandi whether she’s always had country roots and she admitted that she has always been inspired by music that gives a nod to country.  She also said she wanted to give this song a “Christine McVie Fleetwood Mac feel”.  Well-said girl. 
 
It’s no wonder her music and voice is described as “real and raw with a knack for reckless abandonment” – and Sandi said that this comes with a creative process of starting with a clever line, a contagious melody – and then it all spirals from there, developing into something beyond her control.  Spoken like the true talented artist she is! 
 
I have always wondered how hard – or perhaps easy – it is for artists to lay their feelings out on the table.  I love Sandi’s thoughts on this, again only cementing her talent in the music world: 
 
“I accept my vulnerabilities and feel that my job as a singer/songwriter is to lay myself bare so that others can feel comfortable to let go and succumb to their emotions too. I always set about to write music that can be healing or that can help open your heart and mind”. 
 
The last question I posed to Sandi, as she first became known to the public via podcasts staged from her flat in London, was what advice would she give to young musicians who were in her shoes and trying to break into the music industry.  And I love her answer to bits. 
 
“Be ahead of the curve and know your trade, not only your craft but your trade because half the battle in the music business these days is not only being in the business of making music but also being in the music business”.

Celeb Dirty Laundry was recently honored to be one of several blogs offered a chance to visit the set of the Indie comedy My Man Is A Loser to speak with the cast & crew, observe filming and have dinner with the producers and writer/director.   I have never been on a movie set, so naturally I was super excited to take advantage of this opportunity.  Not to mention I got to meet John Stamos and Michael Rapaport. 
 
We were put up at the Dream Hotel in Chelsea where the movie was being filmed and the trip started off with a dinner with Producer Eric Bamberger & David Goldin from Step One of Many Entertainment, Writer/Director Mike Young and Producer Vince Maggio. 
 
During the dinner, the four spoke about the film, how it came about and the actors. The concept for the movie was thought up by Eric Bamberger.  The movie centers on two married men who enlist their single playboy friend to help them get their  mojo back in an attempt to save their lackluster marriages.  Things start to backfire almost immediately, leaving their wives wondering if the new versions of their husbands are worse than the old ones. 
 
All four spoke very highly about all of the cast and their camaraderie and professionalism.   The movie stars John Stamos, Michael Rapaport, Bryan Callum and Tika Sumpter. 
 
The next day we headed to the Marquee nightclub where they were filming a scene for the movie.  We were taken to the upstairs level  of the  club while filming was taking place on the lower level.  The scene we were watching was a romantic argument between John Stamos’  and Tika Sumpter’s characters.  It was really interesting to see how filming and production actually take place. 
 
The scene we watched being filmed had nightclub patrons dancing to club music as a background.  But of course since the focus of the scene was the dialog and interaction between Stamos and Sumpter music, could not be played during their interaction.  So the scene would begin with music playing for a very short period of time, maybe a minute, to get the dancers started dancing.  Then the music would stop so that the dialog could be heard clearly – but the dancers kept on dancing as if the music was still playing.  This procedure was repeated many times and yet the dancers who had to dance without the benefit of music managed to keep the rhythm and their stamina!  When we went downstairs to the film jungle to have a live view of what was actually being filmed we were impressed at just how realistic it appeared and how well it all came together. 
 
In between takes the actors would come upstairs to refresh themselves at the buffet and the principales would sit with us bloggers and chat and answer questions.  This gave us the opportunity to talk in depth to John Stamos, Michael Raparport and Tika Sumpter and we have already posted some of the highlights of these interviews.

Exclusive! Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s wedding – all the details!

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s forthcoming wedding is one of most anticipated celebrity events, like, ever – and of course heat magazine (on sale now) has all the details on the big day. 
 
Despite speculation that Brangelina would tie the knot at their home in France, heat has learned that the couple will actually get married in New Orleans before the end of the year, and the florists and caterers have already been booked!

“People thought they would choose their house in France, but New Orleans makes so much more sense,” heat’s Brad and Ange insider explains. “They don’t have a permanent place in LA, but they have one in New Orleans. Also, they know how much money will be injected into the city if they wed there.” 
 
It would certainly be a lot easier for Brad and Ange’s A-list guests – who are rumoured to include pals like George Clooney, Quentin Tarantino and Tilda Swinton – to hop over to New Orleans from LA than fly all the way over to France.

heat has also learned that Brad’s brother Doug will perform best man duties again (he had the same job at Brad’s wedding to Jennifer Aniston back in 2000), and that the couple’s children are expected play a part on the day. The girls Zahara, Shiloh and Vivienne could all be flower girls. So cute.
